MerchantWire SMS Country Guide

Canada SMS setup

Official country setup guidance from the MerchantWire SMS app documentation.

Updated September 24, 2026

Select Canada under Settings → General before connecting Twilio. MerchantWire SMS uses one two-way numeric sender so customers can reply to order texts.

Supported sender setup

Use one domestic Canadian SMS long code or a verified North American toll-free number.

  • Canadian long code: supported for the Canada country configuration. Canadian carriers apply strict A2P filtering.
  • Toll-free: must be fully verified before production sending. Twilio recommends verified toll-free for stronger Canadian A2P deliverability.
  • Short code: not supported by MerchantWire SMS.
  • Alphanumeric Sender ID: not supported for Canada and cannot provide the two-way reply path MerchantWire requires.

Add only the sender you intend MerchantWire SMS to use to the selected Messaging Service.

Customer consent

MerchantWire uses an affirmative, unchecked cart opt-in and records the consent time, country, locale, disclosure version, and consent disclosure version for the selected country.

For Canada, the storefront consent presentation:

  • identifies the store and the purpose of the SMS program;
  • explains that consent can be withdrawn;
  • shows the merchant mailing address and website contact information;
  • keeps consent optional and separate from checkout;
  • provides STOP and HELP instructions; and
  • retains verifiable consent evidence.

A phone number by itself is not treated as SMS consent.

English and French

The Canada configuration supports en-CA and fr-CA. Lifecycle messages and customer-facing guidance use the resolved Shopify customer locale when available.

In Twilio Advanced Opt-Out:

  • keep the standard English keywords STOP, START, and HELP;
  • for French-language customers, add ARRET as a French opt-out alias;
  • add AIDE as a French help alias; and
  • use the recommended English and French automatic replies shown by MerchantWire SMS.

MerchantWire SMS does not support Canadian short codes, so short-code-only keyword requirements are outside the supported sender setup.

STOP, START, and HELP

Twilio Advanced Opt-Out must remain enabled. When Twilio classifies a reply, MerchantWire synchronizes the resulting STOP or START state to Shopify. HELP does not change consent.

Run the MerchantWire STOP → START → HELP verification from a phone you control before activation.

U.S. and Canada routing

The Canada country configuration permits destinations in Canada and the United States. The sender must still meet the Canada configuration rules, except that a verified North American toll-free number can serve the supported U.S./Canada toll-free path.

Canada compliance notes

Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) can apply to commercial electronic messages, including SMS. CRTC guidance emphasizes consent, sender identification/contact information, and a readily performed unsubscribe mechanism. MerchantWire uses express opt-in for its transactional program rather than relying on implied consent.

MerchantWire SMS is designed for transactional Shopify order updates. Do not repurpose the templates for promotional campaigns.

Final Canada checklist
